A State of Texas Well Report (often called a driller's log) records how a well was built. Reports for nearby wells can also give you a rough idea of local well depths before you ask for quotes.
Where reports are kept
TWDB's Submitted Drillers Reports (SDR) database is fed by the Texas Well Report Submission and Retrieval System, a joint TDLR/TWDB system that drillers use to file reports. TWDB says it started on 2/5/2001 and began collecting all reports in 2003. Older paper reports are available through the TCEQ Water Well Report Viewer.
How to search
- Open the TWDB Groundwater Data Viewer (link below). By default it shows SDR well reports.
- Zoom to your area or use the find tool to search by tracking number.
- Click a well point to open its report.
- Or use the SDR "Search by County and Use" report, for example Midland or Ector county and "Domestic".
What a report usually shows
Reports typically list the well's location, type of work, proposed use, borehole and casing depths, drilling method, annular seal, a water level if measured, pump type and depth, and the driller's name and license number.
Use it with care
TWDB warns that well locations in the database are not verified by state staff and may be inaccurate. A neighbor's well depth is a clue, not a quote. Ground conditions can vary, so a licensed contractor should evaluate your site.
