We don't publish prices. Any average we printed would be a guess, and quotes vary a lot from one property to the next. These are the factors contractors typically price, so you can compare quotes on the same terms.
Factors that drive the quote
- Depth. How deep the driller has to go to reach a dependable water-bearing zone. Nearby well reports can give a rough idea.
- Borehole and casing. Diameter, casing material and length, screen, filter pack and annular seal.
- Ground conditions. The formations being drilled affect speed and method.
- Pump and controls. Pump type and size, setting depth, wire, pressure switch or controls, and the pressure tank.
- Distance and trenching. Running pipe and power from the well to the house, tank or barn.
- Storage. Added storage tanks or booster pumps for larger needs.
- Local requirements. Any groundwater district registration or permit fees (see permits).
- Water testing and treatment, if needed (see testing).
Comparing quotes
- Ask whether the quote is per foot, a flat price, or both. Ask what happens if the well has to go deeper than planned.
- Ask what's included: casing, pump, tank, trenching, electrical connection, well report filing.
- Check the contractor's TDLR license.
